Arts Edcuation for schools at Corban Estate Arts Centre

In 1892, Assid Abraham Corban, immigrated to New Zealand from Lebanon. Assid and his family purchased land in Henderson in 1902 and created one of the largest and most successful wineries in New Zealand, in Henderson (Auckland). Assid and his wife Najibie had a large family, a successful wine business and were greatly respected by the community.

In 1991, the land was purchased by the Waitakere Council as a community asset. In 1998, the Waitakere Arts and Cultural Development Trust was established and the site became known as Corban Estate Arts Centre.

Today, Corban Estate Arts Centre is a creative hub including an art gallery, artists' studios, performance and dance companies and provide art classes for adults and children.

Corban Esate Arts centre has been running a Learning Experience Outside The Classroom since 2009 (LEOTC). This programme is funded by the Ministry of Education and provides hands-on art workshops for schools.

Henderson North School

In the WAKA HOE workshop; students from Henderson North School investigated customary Maori hoe and waka to develop ideas for a personal hoe (canoe paddle) that combined symbols and patterns to express their cultural identity.  Using wood, paint, and pastel each student applied knowledge of shape, pattern and colour to create a vibrant piece of artwork.

Henderson Valley School

The Students from Henderson Valley School visited the exhibition ‘Re-Collection’ in the gallery in May.

They learned about the installation work of still-life paintings and retro objects by artist Anne-Sophie Adelys. They particularly enjoyed the slides projection and the 60’s music playing in the background.

After the gallery visit they went to the workroom and with Joy, the arts educator, created their own still-life painting based on objects with personal meaning.
